Abstract: Citizen science has gradually become an important source of data for science. In the present work, we further corroborate this notion by confirming the presence of the Giant water bug, Lethocerus patruelis on the island of Cyprus, based on citizen findings. Our records rely almost entirely on information initially provided through social networks by biodiversity-enthusiast users. We investigate the likely origin of L. patruelis in Cyprus and discuss the possibility of an established population of the species on the island. We also outline some initial thoughts on the environmental impact of a possible future establishment on the islands’ water bodies.

The first arrival of the Chinese sand roach Polyphaga cf. plancyi (Blattodea: Corydiidae) in Europe https://travaux.pensoft.net/article/97208/ Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle “Grigore Antipa” 65(2): 163-172

DOI: 10.3897/travaux.65.e97208

Authors: Mihailo Vujić, Nikola Vesović

Abstract: Polyphaga plancyi Bolívar, 1883, also known as Chinese sand roach, it is a large Corydiidae species with a native distribution that includes several Chinese provinces and southern part of the Russian Far East. It is a well-known insect in traditional Chinese medicine, and the biological activity of the compounds isolated from it are actively studied. So far, there are no records of this species outside its natural range, at least outside China. In this article, we present the first record of P. cf. plancyi specimen collected in Europe, probably imported from Shanghai. The specimen was recognized as a non-native cockroach species to Europe via photo posted on social media, and it was subsequently taxonomically identified. Details of its possible origin, its morphology, importance of citizen science, as well as annotations on the other synanthropic cockroaches in Serbia are provided.

First records of aneuretine ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Aneuretinae) in late Eocene Rovno amber (Ukraine) https://travaux.pensoft.net/article/85206/ Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle “Grigore Antipa” 65(2): 69-80

DOI: 10.3897/travaux.65.e85206

Authors: Alexander Radchenko, Mykola Khomych

Abstract: Aneuretinae is an enigmatic ant subfamily with poorly defined morphological boundaries. Aneuretus simoni Emery, 1893, found only in Sri Lanka, is a “living fossil”, the only known extant species of Aneuretinae. In the distant past, however, Aneuretinae was more diverse and widespread, including eight extinct genera spread across North America, Europe, and the Russian Far East. Here, we report two fossil Aneuretinae species, Protaneuretus succineus Wheeler, 1915 and Paraneuretus tornquisti Wheeler, 1915, found in late Eocene (Priabonian, 37.8–33.9 Ma) Rovno amber (Ukraine), providing distinguishing morphological features and measurements. These species, the first recorded Aneuretinae in Rovno amber, were originally described from Baltic amber of similar Priabonian age. These new records raise the number of reported ants in Rovno amber to 77 species from 39 genera and 9 subfamilies, and indicate that in the late Eocene Aneuretinae were distributed both on the northern and southern coasts of the Paratethys. Fossil evidence suggests that Aneuretinae originated in the Northern Hemisphere and only entered India and Sri Lanka after the Indian subcontinent collided with Asia ~59 Ma. Why Aneuretinae survived to the present only in Sri Lanka remains a mystery.

Authors: Ioan Alexandru Rădac, Ionela Rădac, Cecilia Șerban

Abstract: Although beans are an important part of the human diet, their long-term storage is still problematic due to pest damage by seed beetles. This study provides data on a documented detection of Mexican bean beetle Zabrotes subfasciatus in Romania. A great number of individuals were found inside packages of small white beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) imported from Syria and Ethiopia. Based on the investigation of the infested seeds, rearing and biology of the species, it is unlikely that this alien species is established in Romania. We also provide the first known record of Bruchidius glycyrhizae in Romania, based on its previously known distribution and the range of its host plants, it is more likely an overlooked native species.

New data on the distribution of the threatened Scarce fritillary, Euphydryas maturna (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), in southern Romania https://travaux.pensoft.net/article/70022/ Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle “Grigore Antipa” 64(1): 95-100

DOI: 10.3897/travaux.64.e70022

Authors: Mihai Stănescu, Tibor-Csaba Vizauer, Elena Iulia Iorgu, Ionuț Ștefan Iorgu

Abstract: Euphydryas maturna is a highly endangered species listed on the Annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive as well as on the Annex II of the Bern Convention. Despite being reported from almost all the historical regions of Romania, there are only two published records from Oltenia so far. Several specimens spotted in the Bungețu forest (near Bălcești, Vâlcea county) in late May 2021, are filling this gap in the known distribution of the Scarce fritillary in Romania.

Contributions to the knowledge of the Depressariidae, Peleopodidae, Ethmiidae and Fuchsiini (Lepidoptera, Gelechioidea) of Romania, with an annotated checklist https://travaux.pensoft.net/article/55319/ Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle “Grigore Antipa” 63(2): 203-254

DOI: 10.3897/travaux.63.e55319

Authors: Zoltán Kovács, Sándor Kovács

Abstract: In Romania 102 species of Depressariidae, Peleopodidae, Ethmiidae and Fuchsiini were recorded in the last checklist and its supplement (Rákosy et al. 2003; Rákosy and Goia 2007). The present study deals with a total of 117 species ever recorded from Romania including voucher material studied in this overview: 101 Depressariidae, 2 Peleopodidae, 13 Ethmiidae and 1 Fuchsiini. As a result of the analysis of the studied material the Romanian fauna is currently considered to consist of 114 species, 90 of them are confirmed and 24 requiring confirmation. 13 species are recorded for the first time from Romania: Agonopterix bipunctosa (Curtis, 1850), A. coenosella (Zerny, 1940), A. ferocella (Chrétien, 1910), A. irrorata (Staudinger, 1870), A. lessini Buchner, 2017, A. ligusticella (Chrétien, 1908), A. multiplicella (Erschoff, 1877), A. quadripunctata (Wocke, 1857), Depressaria badiella (Hübner, 1796), D. daucella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775), D. sordidatella Tengström, 1848, Exaeretia ledereri (Zeller, 1854) and Anchinia laureolella Herrich-Schäffer, 1854. 2 species are found with unclear taxonomic status: Agonopterix banatica Georgesco, 1965 and Agonopterix dumitrescui Georgesco, 1965. 3 species are formally excluded from the Romanian fauna: Agonopterix agyrella (Rebel, 1917), A. comitella (Lederer, 1855) and Depressaria halophilella (Chrétien, 1908). Additionally, 28 species are first records for different regions of the country and further 15 corrections are made to their distribution within Romania. The examined voucher material is concisely presented by each species, collecting data are presented in detail only in the case of the first records, and a few rarely recorded species, by which the adults, male and occasionally female genitalia are figured.

Abstract: This study reports the occurrence of the ant cricket Myrmecophilus orientalis Stalling, 2010 on the Dodecanese Islands Kos and Tilos, Greece. This is the first evidence of M. orientalis from Greece and Europe. The species lives in ant nests under stones and in dead wood in open scrubland and pine forests. The adults were found in the nests of large Camponotus species, while the juveniles were found in the nests of small ant species of the genera Crematogaster and Lepisiota. We assumed that the species changes the host ant species during its life cycle.
